Topic 1 Introduction

  • What are they? The SDGs are a set of 17 ambitious global goals established to work towards a better and more sustainable future for everyone.
  • What’s included? There are 17 goals and 169 targets in place to be achieved by 2030.
  • How long do they last? They were set up in 2015 and will continue through to 2030.
  • Who set them up? They were initiated by the United Nations with 193 countries signing up to their achievement.
  • Where did they come from? The predecessor of the SDGs were the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The Sustainable Development Goals Values:

  1. Peace: Foster peaceful, just and inclusive societies that are free from violence and fear.
  2. People: End poverty and hunger in all its forms, and to ensure that all humans can fulfil their full potential.
  3. Planet: Protect the planet from degradation.
  4. Prosperity: Ensure that all human beings can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives.
  5. Partnership: Mobilize the means to implement the SDGs.
